Life in Mykonos

Mykonos is a seaside resort famous for its beautiful beaches and for partying. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Greek islands. Life in Mykonos is quite expensive and finding a hotel at a reasonable price will not be that easy.

This was my first time in the Cyclades, and I was not disappointed at all. Mykonos is one of my favorite islands. We spent 4 days in Mykonos, but I could have stayed even longer. We combined this trip with the city of Athens. Find out in this article what to do on the island of Mykonos.

Did you know that….?

Mykonos’ mascot is Peter the Pelican, or rather, its substitute. A pelican named Petros (or Peter), which used to roam around the waterfront, became such a beloved resident, that when it died, another pelican was brought in.

Transportation & Accommodation

How to move around the island of Mykonos ?

The easiest way to get around the island is to rent a scooter or a quad, just like on our previous trips to Santorini and Milos. You can take scenic day trips to different beaches around the island. We decided to rent an ATV and did not regret it, it was really fun! 😃

You can also move by bus. In Mykonos town, there is a bus station that brings you to the beaches.

Click here for more information on the island’s bus network.

Those busses are also available in the night for those who wants to go out. If you want to go out, we recommend you to make use of them as they bring you to the clubs for an affordable price, and it’s more secure than driving yourself.

Our accommodation in Mykonos

We stayed at Petinaros hotel, which is situated a bit outside the main town, but easily accessible by foot if you are in good shape and by ATV.

The prices are not that cheap, but rather the average for the island. We had some nice hotel facilities. The hosts were also very helpful and brought us to the port.

If you are on a budget, I recommend you to look for some Airbnb’s. You will find some nice apartments.

Things to do in Mykonos

Mykonos old town

The old town of Mykonos is also called Chora or little Venice. It is a small picturesque town with beautiful white houses, churches, narrow streets with small typical stores. While walking around, you will also pass by the famous Paraportiani church. This emblematic white church, dating from the 1500s, stands on the waterfront. World-famous windmills also stand on a small hill overlooking the sea. Below are some of the must-sees around the old town of Mykonos.

The windmills

The most famous sight in Mykonos are the 7 windmills on the hill of Mykonos. These icons are wonderful to see.

Little Venice

Little Venice is a part of Mykonos old town where the houses are built very close to the sea. It is a beautiful sight, especially at sunrise and sunset. The place can be very crowded at sunset.

Old port of Mykonos

To handle all the tourists, Mykonos has a new port in the north of the city. The old port is in the heart of the city and offers beautiful views of the city.

Mykonos beaches

There are countless beautiful beaches in Mykonos, so be sure to check out at least a few. Party at the famous Tropicana Beach bar at Paradise Beach or work on your bronze at Paraga Beach.

Here are some of the most famous beaches of Mykonos:

  • Psarou beach. Psarou is one of the most famous beach villages of Mykonos island. We spent 2 afternoons there, a recommender!
  • Elia beach. This is the longest sandy beach in Mykonos.
  • Paradise beach: One of the most iconic beaches, not only in Greece, but in the whole world! You will experience the best parties, restaurants, bars, activities and the #17 best club in the world!
  • Super Paradise beach. This beach stays quiet, but the beach bar gets going in the late afternoon. This beach is also known as a gay beach.
  • Platis Giallos beach. This large beach is quite popular, thanks to the number of hotels which are almost literally on the sand. The hotels, sunbeds and umbrellas, plus the shallow crystal waters, usually attract families and young couples. Those who wish to explore other beaches, can hop on a boat that departs from here, around every hour, to Paradise, Super Paradise and other beaches on the southern end of the island.
  • Paraga beach. This is a relatively small beach and popular, as it’s within walking distance of Paradise Beach.
  • Paradise beach. The famous Tropicana Beach Bar takes this beach to the next level!

Watch the sunset

  • From the heights behind the old town. To get the best view of the sunset, we recommend climbing a little higher into the hills behind the city. There is a viewpoint that you can reach by steps on the north side of the city. The steps start from ‘Mykonos Town Villas‘ and if you follow the path, you will have a beautiful view at the end of the steps. The exact location is here. If you continue to follow the road, you will find a small church on the side of the road with spectacular views. Instead of taking the steps, you can also drive around
  • If you like to enjoy the sunset with a cocktail or a glass of wine in hand, the 180 Degree Sunset Bar is the place for you. It’s located high above the city in the hills, and the views of the city are spectacular!

Mykonos beach club, party until sunrise

One of the other things to do in Mykonos is to party at one of Mykonos beach club. Mykonos’ nightlife is well-known around the world. Start the party at one of the beach clubs and continue until the sun comes up!

Be sure not to miss the Scandinavian Bar, Tropicana Bar or Paradise Club for some of the best parties in Mykonos!

My Tips in Mykonos

  • Lunch at ‘Scorpios and Nammos‘ if you are not on a budget. We didn’t go there, but we heard good echoes.
  • Relax at Psarou Beach, the waters are stunning and perfect for enjoying the Greek sunshine!
