Key West is a place where your days can be spent adventuring out on the water or strolling past colorful houses. Evenings begin with vibrant sunsets and end with a delicious meal out on the town. 😍

The drive from Miami (See here my article – Miami Guide) to Key West is incredible. These 150 miles, 4-hour route takes you through the Florida Keys, over 42 bridges, and into the infamous, southernmost American city, Key West. The Seven-Mile Bridge spans, seven miles, and connects the middle and lower keys.

Where we stayed in Key West?

We booked via the booking site, a nice room, but quite expensive. As we booked late, it was the only hotel available at that period. You can rent bikes at the hotel, what we actually did. The hotel is situated about 10 min by foot from Duval street. Unfortunately, that hotel is now closed, but I suggest you to find a hotel or apartment not far from the center.

How to move around Key West? 🚲

The best way to get around is by bicycle as the distances are short. We rented during our 2 days’ trip bikes.

Find out here below the 10 things to do in Key West.

1. Hemingway house

When visiting the museum, they provide a tour of the space along with a history of Hemingway. If you really love Hemingway, then of course I would recommend the tour; you will learn a lot about his time in Key West. We decided not to visit the house as we were limited in time.

2. Drink a fresh coconut

The coconuts here are 100% as authentic and 100% as delicious. 🤤

3. Rent a bike

As already said above, rent a bike to better discover the town.

4. Duval Street

Walk on Duval street which is the main street of Key West. I highly recommend you to have dinner and cocktail here. The vibes by night are amazing!

5. Beach day

You can enjoy the beach at Smathers Beach, which is the largest public beach in Key West. I walked along the sand and hung out under the palm trees for a short while before hopping back on my bike and riding towards the Old Town. If you expect to find nice sandy white beaches, you are wrong. Smathers Beach is the only found one we found.

6. Do a boat tour

Book a boat tour and a water sport adventure. Key West is more a place where hopping on a boat tour rather than tan at the beach.

7. Watch the Sunset

Watch the sunset at Mallory square. Every night there’s a street carnival celebrating the sunset.

8. Bahama village

Walk around Bahama village. It is a local neighborhood with funky shops, galleries, and some good bars. It’s full of fun street art depicting Key West’s earliest local residents.

9. Southernmost point

Go to the southernmost point of the USA. You should know that Key West is the absolute southernmost point in the continental United States, located just 90 miles from Cuba.

10. Shop in Key West

There’s plenty of shopping on and just off Duval Street ranging from t-shirt shops, boutiques, high-end brands, and artisan galleries. There are quaint shops and eating places on the side streets around Mallory Square. For unique artisan shopping, head further down Duval toward the Southernmost Point and off the side streets and visit the many artisan galleries.
